The gospel of Matthew records Jesus teaching about vision regarding the kingdom of God through the use of parables. One day, Jesus’ disciples questioned Him about it. “He replied, ‘The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. This is why I speak to them in parables: ‘Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand’” (Matthew 13:11-13).
Let’s look at these verses a little more closely.
- What is the “kingdom of heaven”? It is described as “God’s heavenly kingdom coming to earth in the person of Jesus” (NKJV Study Bible). It includes the establishment of His rule in the lives of His people, the overcoming of evil and the consequences of sin, and the creation of a new order of righteousness and peace (NIV Study Bible).
- Why is it a secret? It is only a secret to those who are not willing to receive Jesus’ message. To those who are truly seeking understanding and putting their faith in Jesus, God reveals truth through revelation.
- Who receives this knowledge? Those who are willing to receive Jesus’ message have eyes that can see, ears that can hear, and hearts that understand.
- What’s the promise? Whoever has spiritual understanding will receive more.
Jesus reassured His followers with, “But blessed are your eyes because they see” (Matthew 13:16a).
May our spiritual eyes be open, seeing and following His light, and focused on His way.
