Take a Chance

Recently, I was invited to join a group of ladies at an English teahouse. Everything about it was a new experience. Besides not knowing what to wear, I would only know one other person! I could have easily bowed (or curtseyed) out but decided to take a chance and try the adventure.

You may have similar thoughts when someone invites you to church or church event. Our imaginations run wild and we can become anxious or we can ask questions and do a little research. If someone invites you, ask what people wear, the length of the service, what happens during the service, the tone of the atmosphere, etc. Nowadays, it helps that many services can be viewed online for a sneak peek.

There are lots of great churches that preach the Word of God, have excellent music, and work hard to make all feel welcome. If a sincere friend makes the invitation, it is doubtful they will steer you wrong. Take the chance especially if you are not regularly attending church. Scripture says, “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing” (Hebrews 10:25a).

New experiences can be intimidating, especially if you don’t know what to expect. But if it sounds like an encouraging, uplifting experience, why not give it a try? A little FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) could do us a little good and may actually be a first step to an amazing transformed life.

As for the tea, I enjoyed lovely conversation, made connections with new friends, ate lots of yummy treats, and tasted clotted cream. I would definitely have missed out if I had not taken a chance.

An Empty Page

Hi! I’m Teresa’s keyboard. It appears she doesn’t know what to write today so I’m taking over. I saw her looking through a list of memory verses, and browsing through her Bible, and even closing her eyes but she still looks blank. So, I thought I’d step in because sending an empty page would be embarrassing!

On the other hand, an empty page might be just the key. I’ve observed you humans racing at a sprinter’s pace for quite a while now. You have To Do lists, filled calendars, and daily agendas. I was wondering how your time with God was going. Do you come to Him with your To Do lists, plans completed, and your ‘all together’ face on?

Let’s go back to the idea of an empty page. What if you started the day with, “Hey, God! What would You like me to do today? What would You like to write on my calendar?” Or better yet, “What would You like to write on my heart?”

Scripture talks about God’s desire to write His law on your hearts and minds (Jeremiah 31:33). He also has a plan for you. “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (Jeremiah 29:11).

Perhaps, you and Teresa should all create some blank space and allow God to fill it. Give Him permission to write on your heart and mind as well as your schedule. And make time to listen to His plans for you. Allow Him to mold and make you into the person He wants you to be. After all, He’s been in the creation business a long time.

Scripture Answers Itself

Some people think they have all the answers. Just ask them. At one point, my preschool-aged daughter regularly responded with, “I know that” to every tidbit of new information we shared. Teenagers and young adults also tend to think they know best.

On the other hand, the older we get, most of us realize the more we don’t know! Questions abound. The question is, where do we look for answers?

I recently heard a pastor teach that when we have a question pertaining to Scripture, the best place to search out the answer is within Scripture itself. After preaching for decades, this seasoned clergyman suggested we look up other references for the subject or word. Find how else the word is used in Scripture and with a little effort, investigate the original language, word meaning, and contextual setting.

I applied this technique to the following interesting verse, “For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you” (Isaiah 41:13). I thought, what’s the deal with the “right hand”?

I found many verses in Psalms where God is at the “right hand” as a sustainer and protector. One example being, “Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken” (Psalm 16:8). And, “For he stands at the right hand of the needy one, to save his life from those who condemn him” (Psalm 109:31). Those verses gave me a much clearer picture.

So next time we have a question about Scripture, I hope we will begin looking for answers in God’s Word. Remember, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Tell or Treasure

The celebration of Christmas is long past, but I am still contemplating lessons that I can apply today. For instance, think about the response of the shepherds to the angels’ message compared to Mary’s response once visited by those shepherds.

After the shepherds were visited by angels who told them about the birth of a Savior, they rushed off to find Him. “When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, … But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart” (Luke 2:17, 19).

Clearly, the shepherds were to proclaim the Good News that had been revealed to them. Believers were assigned a similar role by Jesus in the Great Commission when He taught, “Go and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:19). And the apostle Paul added, “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us” (2 Corinthians 5:20).

In many instances, we are called to speak up and speak out. Other times, like Mary, we are to treasure things close to our heart. Ponder what has been revealed. Mull it over in our mind and consider the weight. Perhaps the revelation or instruction is for us alone or something God will add to later or allow us to share at another time.

Solomon, the wisest man ever, summarized that there was a “time for everything” including “a time to be silent and a time to speak” (Ecclesiastes 3:7). May we learn to pause and seek God’s wisdom to know which to do when.

He Turns Toward You

Imagine you are in a group of people, some you are familiar with and others are strangers. Then you notice someone whom you’d like to notice you. But they never do. Whether on purpose or not, they never turn your way or acknowledge your existence. It feels they are giving you the cold shoulder, snubbing you, rejecting you, or at least, ignoring you.

This is something the Lord will never do! In the Psalms we hear, “Look upon me and be merciful to me, as Your custom is toward those who love Your name. Make Your face shine upon Your servant” (119:132, 135). “For the LORD your God is gracious and merciful, and will not turn His face from you if you return to Him” (2 Chronicles 30:9).

When we turn to Him, the Lord turns toward us. He is always near, even when we are not walking with Him. There is nowhere we can go from His Presence or His view and He longs for us to turn toward Him.

Imagine that first scene again. The One whose kindness you desire has locked eyes with yours. It feels as if you are the only two in the room and you have His full attention. He radiates acceptance and compassion. He knows all about you and still chooses to love you. He desires to spend time with you and have a relationship with you.

Now, it’s your turn. Will you stay turned towards Him or choose to ignore Him?

Watch Your Step!

I enjoy a little hiking, but if you know me, you know I don’t want the path to be too rugged, too steep, or too long. Can anyone relate?

On one trail that tended to remain muddy after rain or snow, we found stepping stones strategically placed to help the next trekker. (Not as meticulously as the photo below, but you get the point.)

It reminded me of God’s help on my life path. If I carefully followed the steps in front of me, I would stay out of the muddy wetland and remain dry. If not … yuck!

Scripture teaches that God desires to provide daily direction and encourages us to stay on “paths of righteousness” (Psalm 23:3). He longs to lead us on the best paths, those that are “straight,” “level,” and “firm” (Proverbs 4:11, 26).

When I read, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path” (Psalm 119:105), I imagine the lamp as something that shines close by, on just the very next step. And, it’s up to us whether we will take that step. When we venture off on our own, we typically find a dead end or dangerous or painful consequences.

When we seek God, He is faithful to lead us back to the right path. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways know him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

May we not be too proud to ask for directions.

I AM

What’s in a name? Expectant parents spend hours laboring over a name for their child. They may research the meaning and background of names as well as who has shared the name. A name is important in that it may point to one’s character or personality.

When Moses asked God His name, God replied, “This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you’” (Exodus 3:14).

I AM echoes with supreme authority, absolute power, and unequivocal truth. I AM is eternal and immeasurable, beyond our ability to comprehend.

I AM breaks the barriers of time. It portrays God as present in every millennia. I AM is always in the state of ‘being.’ God always was, is, and will be.

After Jesus was arrested, the high priest questioned Him. “‘Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?’ ‘I am,’ said Jesus. ‘And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven’” (Mark 14:61-62).

Not only was Jesus the Son of God, He was claiming to be God Himself, God in flesh. He proved His claim by fulfilling every prophecy recorded in Scripture, many having been spoken hundreds of years in advance. Jesus demonstrated He was God by the miracles, signs, and wonders He performed and by defeating death by His ultimate resurrection.

I pray that when you face the great I AM and if He asks you if you are a believer in His Son, that you will be able to honestly and joyously reply, “I am.”

Surprised by Satan

All seemed to be going well. Then, something caught your eye. It had your attention and soon, your full-blown focus. As you approached, it drew you closer. And, before you knew it, wham! You were caught. Trapped.

At first glance, it appeared harmless or you justified it as so, but in your heart, you knew it was Temptation. Surprised by Satan’s scheme, you never guessed how deep it could drag you down and how far off your path you’d wander. You’d let down your guard and fallen into sin.

God warns us about Satan’s character and his deceitful tactics:
“Do not give the devil a foothold” (Ephesians 4:27).
“Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8b).
“When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44c).

God also provides us an offensive plan:
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).
“Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes” (Ephesians 6:11).
Therefore, “Be self-controlled and alert” (1 Peter 5:8a) and focus instead on “him who is able to keep you from falling” (Jude 24). That is, keep your eyes on Jesus.

Just when you think you’re safe, just when you least expect it, that attractive bait will catch your eye. Only this time, you can be ready. Remember, the lure is a lie. Be alert so as not to be surprised. Identify it for what it is, a trap of Satan. Resist, flee, and be victorious.

Thanks be to God who gives us the victory! (1 Corinthians 15:57)

Huddle Up

Football fans understand the importance of the huddle. There, players receive the plan, check strategies, and hear the next step to take to reach the goal. It’s where they receive insight, direction, and encouragement and are expected to give their best.

Hey, that sounds very similar to what we do when we draw near to God. In our mind, we step in close to listen so as not to miss ‘the call’ as the world is screaming its agenda. Much of the time, we are silent. Sometimes, we ask questions … and then, listen some more … or take time to read the ‘playbook’ (God’s Word).

Your small godly huddle is also a time to ‘catch your breath’ between ‘plays.’ There, you receive God’s direction, correction, and encouragement. At times, He may give you a slap on the back or a slap on the hand. Depending on the situation, He may cheer you on, dry your tears, or surround you with comfort and peace.

Without a routine ‘huddle,’ we miss out on offensive and defensive strategies, insights we need in order to succeed. We fumble and fail to mature, go the wrong direction, and don’t focus on our goal of living Christ-like.

Like football players, we experience the best outcome when we follow the given plan. Blessings are ‘scored’ and the ‘Coach’ and ‘teammates’ rejoice with us when we walk in obedience, giving our all.

“You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence” (Acts 2:28). “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8).

Take time for the huddle.

Who Me? Couldn’t Be!

Remember when your teacher called on you, and your hand wasn’t even raised? It felt like a dirty trick, especially when others around you were clearly volunteering!

Seems like a similar thing happened to Moses when God spoke to him from a bush that was on fire but not burning up.

God’s message to His newly chosen leader was (1) I have seen the misery of My people, (2) I have heard them crying out, (3) I am concerned about their suffering, and (4) I have come down to rescue them out of that land. (Exodus 3:7-8)

Finally, God was going to rescue the Israelites out of their Egyptian captivity. It sounded like a great plan to Moses … until he heard the rest of God’s message. “So now, go. I am sending you” (Exodus 3:10). Wait. What?

Moses’s excuses began. But, I didn’t raise my hand! Who am I? What if they ask me questions I can’t answer? What if they don’t believe me or listen to me? I don’t speak well! I’m not qualified. And finally, “O Lord, please send someone else to do it” (Exodus 4:13).

God met Moses where he was. He promised Moses He would be with him. He gave Moses miraculous signs to show the Egyptians. God even sent Moses’s brother along as his mouthpiece. Moses accomplished the work God assigned and Israel successfully left Egypt for the Promised Land.

God has a work for us as well, whether our hand is raised or not. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). Know that God will be with us and will help us with whatever He has in mind.

Who me? Yes, you … and me. May we watch and listen for God’s calling and surrender to what He calls us to do.
